GRIEF AFFECTS THE MIND AND BODY
The loss of a cherished loved one is a devastating time. Your whole world is turned upside down and nothing will be the same. Grief affects not only your emotions but your entire body. I remember the first days after Will died I cried everyday and didn't want to get out of bed. I didn't realize that losing my husband would make my body react in such a negative way as well. The times that I thought I was getting better my body was saying no way! My blood pressure started going up, I would wake up with my heart racing, I had headaches, my stomach was upset, I craved carbs, I got thrush in my mouth and I could not sleep.
As a social worker, I knew the stages of grief and the signs and symptoms of depression. I didn't want to fall into a deep hole of despair. I told my doctor about my sleep issues and I started taking melatonin.
Melatonin is a hormone our bodies produce and at night your body makes more which helps us to sleep. I took a melatonin supplement
and it helped with my sleep as I didn't want to take an anti-anxiety medication (which was my personal preference, there's nothing wrong with it). It was a slow go but my sleep got better. The grief work is a difficult process but by God's grace and some serious self care you can see brighter days.
